Housing & oil bubbles bursting good for Americans because prices returning to normal?

With the oil and housing bubbles bursting, prices us ordinary folk pay are returning to their lower, more natural levels? Ask your Congress person if this is true. Please tell me if its false. The present mess is partly the fault of the Bush Admin because the SEC hasnt been doing its job. But the "investment bank crisis" has been brewing since 1913 when CONGRESS gave up its Constitutional power to "coin money and regulate the value thereof" to the bankers. In 1913 CONGRESS gave us the Federal reserve (which is not government but bankers) and the income tax. It started with paper money. Read your dollar bill, it says Federal Reserve NOTE. A note is an instrument of debt, a promise to pay, not actual payment. So weve been using IOUs to do business. In 1934 America went bankrupt. So by law, people were forced to line up at the banks and trade in their gold coins (which is real money) for paper. In 1964 the government mints took silver out of the coins. Ah, now inflation can really start. The bankers can print all the money they want, loan it into circulation. Since then the bankers have invented all manner of "investments" like "derivatives" and "hedge funds" which has resulted in a house of cards allegedly built on real estate loans. For the last 20 years that house of cards has gotten taller and shakier. Where was government oversight? Where has the Securities and Exchange Commission been? Then a few years ago CONGRESS made the bankers start loaning "sub-prime" to people who they shouldnt have loaned to, but as long as the payments were being made, the bankers were happy to collect the interest. Over the last few years the Federal Reserve (which is the bankers, not government) has kept interest rates too low. Resulting in lots of people getting adjustable rate mortgages at the bottom of the interest rate cycle. Bankers aka Federal Reserve raise the rate (to curb inflation which they created by making money out of thin air) peoples payments go up, they cant afford the payments and the house of cards starts to get very shaky. Meanwhile, the last 2 years the Fed has been printing money and creating credit like crazy called inflation. On the world oil market, oil needs to be paid for by every country in "dollars". Rampant inflation means it takes more dollars to buy the barrel of oil. Lehman, which just went under, was a major "speculator" driving up oil prices. The reason oil prices have recently plunged is that their speculative bubble burst, as all bubbles will. So combine the housing bubble bursting, oil bubble bursting, we see the house of cards falling and major investment firms and insurance companies going under. Can we blame Bush? Sure, the SEC has allowed this game to continue to the breaking point. But the true culprit is CONGRESS for not at least keeping a leash on its creation from 1913. CONGRESS is supposed to "regulate the value" of money, not the bankers. But Congress persons are so busy getting reelected every 2 years they probably never had time to actually read The Constitution. Meanwhile, people got suckered into investing 401k and IRA in the stock market, which is basically gambling with the speculative bankers. So the current mess (and its not over yet) has been brewing for a long time and nobody in government, which is supposed to be providing oversight of their created corporations, has done their job, since forever. Maybe because the government folks have somehow benefited from . . . oh, no, thats impossible, our public servants would never . . . SELL US OUT for their own benefit . Answer: Some of what you are saying is true, but they had safety in place up to 1999...... You can Blame Bill Clinton and a congress of 1999 for this resent crisis, it's not all FRB fault. This is investment Banking problems. Glass-Steagall Act of 1933 was designed to prevent the kinds of speculative conflicts of interests that pervaded Wall Street in the 1920s and helped bring about the Great Depression and this resent crisis. In 1999, the law banning brokerages and banks from marrying one another — the Glass-Steagall Act of 1933 — was REPEALED , and voila, the financial supermarket has grown to be the places we know as Citigroup, UBS, Deutsche Bank, et al. But now that banks seemingly have stumbled over their bad mortgages, it’s worth asking whether the fallout would be wreaking so much havoc on the rest of the financial markets had Glass-Steagall been kept in place. With the stroke of a pen, Bill Clinton ended the long saga of Republicans and Democrats, working in concert, for their puppet masters (the bankers) with his signing of the 'Financial Modernization Bill' (Nov 12, 1991). As he signed his name, William Jefferson Clinton symbolically signed the death warrant of a level playing field. Clinton & both parties knew better than FDR and our Supreme Court. Nov 12-1999, President Clinton stated, "Glass- Stegal (FDR Banking Bill) is no longer appropriate for our economy. This was good for the industrial age. The (1999) Financial Modernization Bill is the key to rising paycheck and great security for ordinary Americans" (sounds like Obama speech). Tell this to Michigan - NH - California - Georgia etc. The public was distracted from one of the most important pieces of legislation in this nation's history being signed by Bill Clinton, with round the clock coverage, of the Monica debacle. Does McCain get it when even NASCAR does about car tires?

When McCain wanted to save Americans the "gas tax", he was all behind it and pushing it like it was the winning lottery numbers. That would actually take time for the government to implement, and tie up congress. Now McCain is laughing at Obama when he (Obama) said that people should do things such as making sure your car tires are properly inflated for optimum gas mileage. Basic driver knowledge. Every driver who ACTUALLY has to pay attention to their wallets when gas prices goes up knows, or should know about properly inflated tires. Even NASCAR has said the same thing, along with the DMV handbook, along with others over the years, at least the last 22 years that I have been driving. Here is my question. Everyone who drives and has to pay out of their own pockets to fix a car, fill up their tank, etc. should know about properly inflated tires. McCains camp actually went as far as to hand out pressure guages in the area Obama was speaking today in Michigan. Is McCain to priviledged and rich to actually KNOW that Obama was right? x_tedee_bear_x: next time, you might want to read my question before you respond. What part of my question was about energy policy. I give you about 3 paragraphs and YOU still dont get the question. The gas tax was not a solution either, but you probably read that in there somehow. For those with the thin skin. Get over yourself.
Answer: Funny isn't it. What is really crazy is that when they check up on tire pressures most people are driving on under or over inflated tires. Obama is right with his numbers. If people had the good sense to actually check the governments own numbers they would see he is a truther and McCain is a nontruther.

The banks screwed up by giving out home mortgages to every lazy dead beat slug out there, and now they want the government to intervene in the free market. Screw those banks. Let them fail. Answer: You don't like the $700 billion bail out for the wrong reasons. I hate the bail out as much as you do but get more information so you can have better reasons to hate it. Do you know that it's actually 5 trillion dollar bail out. Do you know that banks do have money but it's all invested in real estate and with the bail out, they will get it all back and they will also keep the properties and the interests they have accumulated for those high risk, high interest loans. The banks probably knew that George Bush was going to support a bail out and that is why they made so many high risk loans so easily available. It's a win freaking win for the bankers. Are you concerned about all the partisanship and rancor in this election?

In answering this question, try to set aside any partisan bias you might have. One of the things weve heard though out this election cycle is working together, reaching across the aisle, compromise, etc. But Im honestly afraid the partisanship and rancor of this election is going to completely bind up congress. Assuming Democrats wind up winning the White House, the Senate, and the House, I hope they dont act like theyve been given keys to the kingdom and I hope they will honestly try to work with the Republicans on reaching compromises. On the same token, I hope the Republicans wont try to play a game of stalemate. I hope they will work on compromise rather than trying to filibuster. I also hope that should the Democrats control both houses, they will stand up to Obama (assuming he is elected) and not just act like a rubber stamp. I know that once the election is over, I intend to send a letter to my Senators - Fienstien and Boxer, to my Congressman, and to Nancy Pelosi. I will urge all of them to work for the best interest of the entire country, and not just the Democrats. Assuming McCain wins the White House and the Democrats control the house, I would hope they will all work together to find compromise. I hope that neither will simply try to be a roadblock to the other.
Answer: Since the Democrats will control everything after this election (except a bare 5-4 working conservative majority on the Supreme Court), there will be even less reason for bipartanship... particularly if the Dems have a 60+ filibuster-proof vote in the Senate. The Congress would hardly be a rubber stamp for Obama, however - it would more likely be the other way around. Chris Dodd, Barney Frank and Nancy Pelosi will be running the country and Obama will be rubber-stamping their legislation. The only good thing to come from an Obama victory - the economy is likely to get so bad over the next two years; and with some major blunder on foreign policy - the country will panic and vote the Republicans back into control of Congress by the 2010 mid-term elections. We are Americans and we like our government divided. They can do a lot less damage that way.

How many seats US Congress will be up for grabs in the upcoming November elections?

I am a Liberal but I know that with the Obama Administrations extremely low approval rating - Republicans are going to win in just about all races. I just am not sure how many seats in both the Senate and House will be up for grabs. How can I find out?
Answer: Every two years -every- seat in the House of Representatives is up for grabs. They serve 2 year terms. So they have to get re-elected in every even-year election. Senators serve for six years, so 1/3 of the seats come up every time. There are any number of websites that list all the races. Just google 'Senate races 2010' or 'congressional races 2010'. I think anti-incumbent feeling has been greatly exaggerated by the Republicans. Whenever the Republicans are out of office they push anti-incumbency measures. Last time it was term limits (which they fought hard for as the minority, but forgot all about once they had majorities in both houses), and the DRIP campaign (Don't Re-elect Incumbent Politicians). But in fact incumbents have a huge advantage and they are very hard to unseat. In the primary earlier this month, all the news networks reported a very strong anti-incumbent feeling in the electorate. But of 80-something incumbents who had to defend their seats, all but 2 won, and one of those was only forced into a run-off.

Im happy Bush is going to speak out against earmarks, or overspending by congress (now that the democrats control congress). It's sickening and it could be stopped by using protective tariffs. Our government exists to protect OUR interests. Racist, jingoist? Whatever. It's our prerogative. With news that Congress has passed its ballyhooed $1 billion “Cash for Clunkers” bill, we feel compelled to voice our skepticism about the program. Here’s the bill in a nutshell: Buyers of new vehicles between July 1 and November 1 will be given a voucher for $3500 if they forfeit a post-1984 car or truck that has been registered for at least one year and has a combined fuel economy rating at least 4 mpg lower than their new vehicle. The voucher grows to $4500 if the increase in fuel economy is 10 mpg or higher. The old car or truck is then crushed and recycled. Here are five reasons we don’t think this program is worth the time it took to draft it, let alone a billion dollars: 1. The voucher replaces the trade-in deal you might otherwise get from the dealership; it’s not in addition to the car’s private sale or trade-in value. In other words, if you’re trading in a car that’s worth $3000, your net gain is only $500. Although if your car is worth $100, CFC couldn’t come at a better time. 2. We’re not sure how many folks driving cars worth $3500 or less are in the market for a new car in the first place. Sure, there’s the occasional fresh-out-of-college new-hire (we’re not sure who’s hiring right now, but we’ll play make-believe) that might still be ready to move from a Dodge Omni to a shiny new Honda Insight, but people driving cheap old beaters are probably doing so because they can’t afford a new car. And $3500 doesn’t go far when the average transaction price of new cars hovers around $24K. The vouchers don’t apply toward the purchase of used cars, for which the majority of old beaters are traded in. 3. People driving large, gas-gulping old cars and trucks often do so because they need the utility those vehicles provide. Old station wagons, for example, have few modern counterparts that are as versatile while achieving better fuel economy. Ditto pickups, which have gotten bigger and more capable but not much more fuel-efficient. And if the government thinks that someone is going to step out of a 1994 Dodge Ram into a Honda Fit, they need to get out of D.C. a little more often. 4. Naturally, we have some reservations about any bill designed to facilitate wiping out—we’re sorry, recycling—any automotive species. And let’s face it, while there are a lot of bona fide clunkers out there, we’re afraid that a bunch of future classics will get caught in this roundup. We propose, then, that a certified auto enthusiast (paid, of course) be placed at all certified CFC dealerships to screen the cars that are brought in, returning the cool cars—including anything with T-tops—to the streets. 5. Besides cleansing the U.S. of gas-guzzling pigs, the other supposed benefit of the CFC program is to provide a short-term boost to the starving auto business. However, we hope these legislators don’t expect it to meaningfully help the domestic automakers. Many of the automobiles with fuel-economy ratings high enough to qualify for the vouchers come from Japan and Korea. On the bright side, the cost to taxpayers will be minimal when no one actually participates.

What is the biggest difference between Medicare and Medicaid?

When president Obama ran for president he told us all that he was going to redistribute the wealth of those who have to the those who have not. Where does a huge amount of wealth in this country reside? So why is it that our president and congress have come up with a plan to force everyone onto Medicaid? I know why because I have experienced it first hand and youll be shocked to find out. Do you know? I will provide an answer if you cannot figure it out. It will shock you.
Answer: I am not highly familiar with these programs, but as I age I begin to care more and more about them and worry a great deal. I heard something recently that indicated that if you were on Medicaid that you had to sign over all your property to the government. I am not sure of all the parameters of this but I found it very scary. I have wondered if our already over-reaching government, under the guise of giving people health care actually wants to take the property of the elderly. This sounds so greedy and wrong, but it does not surprise me. I would appreciate if someone else has more details. Wouldn't it be sad if our government forced seniors to go on Medicaid and then they had to sign over their homes in order to get medical care? Seniors are in such a vulnerable position and tend to be more trusting than they ought to be. I sure do worry. I do have all my property set up in a trust, thankfully, and my kids are trustees and I doubt my property could be taken but these politicians are tremendously devious. The wealth people generally have upon retirement is in the property they own, and not much else.

Would Personal Accountability Be Helpful to Reduce the Deficit?

What if the Congressional Budget Office were tasked with creating an annual report, with help from the General Accounting Office, of the appropriations that can fairly be attributed to the Yea votes of individual Senators and Congresspersons? This would be a list of names from the biggest spenders to the smallest spenders with the approximate amount spent in a column to the right of each name. So it would be about a five page report, once a year. The problem now is that we have 635 sailors on shore leave all using the same credit card, and each sailor gets full praise and high honors for the pork they bring home to their districts. They get full recognition for the pork brought home -- the bacon brought back to the districts voters, but they get absolutely no individual accountability for the tax dollars that they individually have voted to expend. We know what the authorization bills authorize and what the appropriations bills appropriate. And we know who votes Yea for those bills -- its electronically recorded. So, after the double counting is purged out, we should be able to tell how much each member of Congress/Senate is responsible for spending. With that list in hand, the constituents in the district can look at the pork brought home, can calculate their own long-term share of the funds spent in terms of tax dollars, and they can figure out if the pork was worth it. Alternatively, they may decide that they dont want any of their Representatives of Senators to be in the top quartile or top half of the big spenders list. They will vote out of office anybody who appears in such a position no matter how much pork the person brings home. Or, maybe they will vote out the big spenders except if they bring home amazing huge amounts of pork, just 25 huge government projects for every city, and 5 for every village in the state, plus two or three useless airports, for every town, named after the politicians -- like the Murtha Airport -- or maybe bridges to nowhere -- like the Sarah Palin bridge. Im suggesting that sunlight is the best path to national solventcy and that anonymity is the runaway train that has given rise to our current crisis. As long as anonymity rules the day, and nobody in Congress is individually accountable, then all the big pork bringers always get re-elected. That creates a positive feedback cycle. The number of big spenders in Congress goes up every election, until finally every single person in Congress is the biggest spender possible at all times (except Judd Gregg and Ron Paul). Darwin understood how positive feedback alters species. Congress is packed with greedy-beaked birds (and Byrds) because of well understood Darwinist principles. The problem is that voters want more than the are willing to pay for, and politicians have been willing to accommodate them,by bowwowing the money.
